My friends and I started in one of the edge supergrids, so definitely not everyone. It's possible there's some sort of algorithm for it though that made the center more likely to start.

Travian distributes players starting positions in a similar way, and if you ever look at how people pop up on the map it seems to spiral outwards from the center. So if you started out earlier you'd be closer to the middle.

Centre or south (not sure but definitely 2-4 supergirds south from a north edge of world...) is much more crowded than the north supergrids. I do not know how it looks on far south.
