How do I deal with a murder attempt?

Quitting the game while in a combat relation is not recommended, since your character will stay in game until the combat relation ends. Which might not happen with less than your death.

Oh that is most unfortunate...so with little means to defend myself, I would probably end up dead if some random guy just felt like killing me and wouldn't stop. Does ducking into a building help at all? Or a mine? Anything else to do but run?

ducking into a building or a mine will end the combat relationship. then you can logout quickly before they follow you in and beat on you some more

I'm more or less the founder of the land Grim is talking about, but one of the other settlers there made the claim to it while I was away to help protect some of our things, and he recently left the settlement and removed his claim. Just today I made my own claim, but the server died and now it's gone, but still thinks I have a claim somewhere. So now I can't make another, can you help?

Well we set one of them right...I won't give names in public, a ranger offered to help me for free and got rid of one of the thieves for good. They have a settlement sort of far off to the south.
