Wouldn't they be unable to mine near the entrance?

Oh right, I totally forgot you can't mine near the entrance. Then you could indeed easily defend it.

Unless... they build a minehole on the surface just behind the brickwalls. If I understood the current system right then the surface layer and the cave / first mine layer are right on top of each other, which means a well placed minehole can screw all your defense plans.

I'm pretty sure you can't build anything one tile close to cave walls, the un-minable ones at least.

i see that problem too: cave entrance is hard to mine (on first party there isnt even a message like "too hard"), but there is the wall-2tiles_free-paving restriction.

deeper it would be not that hard to dig around
