wall strengh differs in about 10 tiles (like from slightly too hard to mine-able), so you might try a bit more in that cave you found

well...short cave, it apparently was cut in half by a thin line so im guessing it has a second entrance that i havent found, the other was cut off by an underground river and i didnt have a boat.... i never found it again though >.<
