I actually find it a little strange that people necessarily expect flat rates across the entire game world. In my mind, it should be subject to market forces. Say I control every metal node in a supergrid radius. You want some iron? 100 bricks. You don't like it? You want the price that someone else is offering three SGs away? Then go trade with them.

In practice there will be standards like these only because it isn't feasible to run a total monopoly on all metal nodes, and because the crossroads system somewhat breaks the ability to hold your neighbors in a supergrid hostage to your monopoly.
