You don't need to put anything in it, it is not like a oven or a kiln where you put stuff in it. It is like a fire, you right click on it then launch a recipe, like bone glue, if you have the ingredients in your bag the recipe will be made. The only thing you must do it put some fuel and water to have the cauldron work, thats all.

im not sure if this works for cauldron, but i think u can insert whole tree logs for instant full fuel
