How to survive

Armor has 3 values, HP, Deflect, and Soak. Armor will Block damage equal to Deflect+Soak and take damage to its own HP equal to the Soak damage it takes. Damage must overcome Deflect before it spills over to Soak. Once Armor runs out of HP it breaks. Unarmed and Melee attacks do a % of their damage in piercing though, damage that ignores your armor and goes directly to your SHP. So yes, armor acts like a buffer between the enemies attacks and your HP.

Not sure if this always works, but a bear knocked me unconscious and I decided to play dead. Just waited until he wandered off screen before getting up and porting home. Took a couple minutes, but it's better than dying imo.

I tried that with the bear that killed me

As soon as I woke up he butchered me to death, even though I didn't get up or move.

This does not work. They'll decide to spare you or let you live randomly.

I was killed by a bear! It knocked me out twice and decided to kill me the second time.

How do I prepare my next character to survive a bear attack? Note I don't need to kill it.. assume I'm about 30sec-1min away from safety (boat or house). Is it just a matter of pumping UA and CON? How much do I need?

If you only have few hit points and get knocked out, don't stand back up, either play dead or logout, soon or later the beast will go away or de-spawn.
Anything that knocks you out on the first hit, WILL kill you with a second one.

Try to avoid getting near wild animals in the first place, playing at higher resolutions really helps with that ( never been caught by an animal since I started playing at 1920x1080 ).

If it's random, god I'm lucky. I've been gored 15 times since starting playing a week ago and haven't died once. Mind you, only got double gored once when I didn't realize the boar was behind a rock.
