Nah, chips are from chopping, they don't curl up like shavings.

That's true, and for wood, I would suggest shavings, but chips may be a more general term because they can also describe metal removed by machining.

When you use a plane, the leftover wood bits are called wood shavings. "Wood chips" applies only to chopping.

I wouldn't take anything on wikipedia with 100% accuracy. I can find resources that would call the curled metal bits from machining 'shavings' just like they are called from a plane. It also depends on what part of the world you come from and what "English" you speak. After all, is it a 'chip' or a 'fry'?
