Mining in caves

I think I'm having the same problem. i have mining, and i have the action icon to mine, i get the pickax pointer, but when i click on a wall nothing happens. i just stand there doing nothing, not even walking over to the wall. I've moved farther in to the cave, well more than 10 tiles but i still get nothing.

We found iron relatively easily, in a kinda soft rock. lvl 13 str required.

wow you're lucky. 18 str and can hardly scratch the rock

It's more like 25 tiles from the entrance.

Can anybody confirm please if the zig-zag method is still a viable mining technique or am I gonna have the mountain fall on my newb head, thx.
