What about "just" slightly too hard? I got those two different messages when mining.

"Slightly too hard to mine" and "Just slightly too hard to mine"

this means the most quality ore you can mine is 8. and I'm pretty sure it starts at 10.

This is untrue. I can self confirm that a q8 stone axe and 10 str were enough to mine walls.

That's just what I read on the wiki: http://ringofbrodgar.com/wiki/Mining

"The hardness of a wall appears to be equal to the quality of ore and stone you receive from mining it. In order to mine a wall, you appear to need sqrt(Strength * Tool_Quality) >= Wall_Hardness. For example, in order to mine a quality 10 rock wall with a quality 10 stone axe or pickaxe, you would need 10 strength."

"just" means you're closer than if there's no "just".

OMG HAX!!!

EDIT: Actually, I'm just jelous that I can't seem to use fishing yet. If the server would restart maybe I could have some luck finding a string. Until then I stick with my hax verdict.

For the people who don't like math in this case we need a mining quality of +1 to +15. That means that the mining score before square root (tool times strength) for a 23 wall (8+15) is 529.

Now if we don't change the axe quality, you'll need a strength of 106 (529/5 = 105.8) to mine that wall. Yeah... that sucks doesn't it? It's an effect of the square root in the formula.

Alternatively, with 15 strength you'd need an axe of quality 36 (529/15 ~= 35.3) to mine the wall. Sounds a lot nicer... but it's still pretty brutal unless you get lucky on a stone node.

Ok, well... what if there's no mountain around? Quality 10 axe is easy to get, but it still needs 53 (529/10 = 5.29) strength to mine that wall.

Moral of the story? Go hunt a mountain for better stone asap and raise your survival, the tool quality changes the amount of strength you need by a *lot*. Also, get someone to make you a bear cape and a bear tooth amulet, they give you massive bonuses to your strength (very easy to get 55+ strength with just basic bear shit.
