Why do you need to punch them?
Can you just shoot them to death?
Or will they run too fast?

You need to punch them because they flee from you when they get hit. Last world one or 2 punch was enought, but they changed that now so its alot more tricky now. They run slower than you, thats why it is easy to punch them, fox for exemple run faster than you so punching them isn't an option unless you traped them somehow.

Anyway as someone said they changed their behavior so you will have to find the best way to hunt them by your own i guess.

I've never run into this issue before this world, so that is quite startling? The only way I've seen this occur before is if you broke combat with them. Essentially, they run out of your range, break combat, you re-engage them and they're aggressive again. Even then, they'd need to be healed by a deer or dryad to be 100% sure they want to go back into combat with you.

Aiming against a moving target drops your bar way too fast. At 50 Marksmanship with a sling, you can aim while chasing a moving target albeit slowly. 150 Marksmanship with a bow. 300 With a ranger's bow. Higher Marksmanship means faster aiming, of course. It's a lot easier to just punch them than to get the ridiculously high numbers needed to aim at moving targets.

I've been told this post of mine was useful so I'll repost it, hope it helps and that the system hasn't changed, the info is based on early w4:

  • If you find a fox inland and can't safely kill it, your best bet is to build the actual fence, then sling or bow away. If at a shore, just fence behind it (see deer techinque)
  • If you find mouflons or aurochsen, wall YOURSELF in with a stone you can chip for ammo - herds do not retreat. If you're shooting from a boat, have fun, they won't run away. But I kill herds only for meat, the time required to kill them for LP just isn't worth it.
  • If you're killing boars, you need to get them to the shore, use mm from the boat until they run, then run after them and punch them from behind until they die (make sure you have full stamina before engaging boars). Even with only about 10 UAC, you should be able to kill them in 2-3 punches.
  • If you're killing deer ALONE, you need to aggro them to get them away from the herd and get them to the shoreline, then you drive away till they deaggro, quickly come back and fence behind them before they move and you can then sling/bow away safely until they die. If you're smart enough and able to dualclient, take an alt with you whose sole purpose is to make fence signs behind the deer while your main is building up his aim bar after getting the deer to the shoreline - you needn't drive away for this method, obviously...I actually prefer to just use MM on them until they stop attacking (green icon) and then I engage them in UAC - the trick is to get enough damage to kill them before they heal themselves, so you first gather 6 IP, use punch or strangle, use flex 5 times, use punch again - do this until you have full combat advantage (should be after 2-3 hits methinks). Once you have full CA, attack them once with a full attack bar (after 5 flexes) then again after about 2 flexes. I think that should work for anyone with semi decent UAC (I did it with about 100 UAC).
  • Bears have 2 techiques - either pelt away at them with a sling until they die (they won't run away cause you won't do enough damage in one hit) or use a bow, which will make the bear run pretty fast, maybe after the 1st hit. When it runs, you need to get out of the boat and just wait until it comes back. BUT, the trick is to get him to follow you to the shore preferably at a point that makes you able to get behind it and block off it's retreat. Once you do that you can use the same UAC technique as with deer (6 ip, punch, 5flex - repeat) until it's dead, it will never reaggro.

One thing to note, animals never reaggro YOU after you make them run away once, BUT if another player aggroes them after you've made them run, the animals WILL attack them. So if you're hunting in a party either make sure you all have aggro before you make an animal run away or make sure that person doesn't aggro after unless they can take it or have a deathwish :P

I've found that everytime you chase a boar to water as it is running away, it will turn around and fight you again. So, you just run away... If you chased it to water, chances are the land is thin and you can make it back to your boat even without a flask.

Foxes: To kill a fox, all you need is 10mm and any quality sling. Pen them in a roundpole fence (yes, not just signs) and sling em to death. Takes at least 10 minutes, but hey you got your fox.

Now oddly enough, you can kill a boar and a bear with the same stats.

Boars: You will need unarmed combat and will to power. Sling them from boats until they run, then run after them and punch them. Since they're running you automatically hit for max damage, which starts off at 50 for a 0 stat guy. The boar has a maximum of 280 hp and they can start running after a lucky hit. It takes practice to dodge through the trees.

*Warning* If there are deer and the boar runs towards them, it may be healed and turn around to attack you.

Bears: I killed my first bear with a q10 sling and lvl 13 MM this world. It took an *hour* though. With a low quality sling, and solo, the bear essentially won't run. Patience, they have up to 800 hp.
