Those aren't very good cities then -- if cities at all.

Get a good idea of how your surrounding terrain looks then go onto the world map and figure it out.

Hey now, I still love dwarf fortress. I'm just waiting for them to build up the ability to have inbuilt goals for later game.

That being said, I'm beginning to agree with Teck on this issue. Find a large city that's not outright hostile, and bloody stay near it. Any area that's "wilderness" will also be nearly completely devoid of rangers actively hunting the bad guys. Without anything to stop thieves/murderers they just go crazy. I'm <1 month playing the game and I've mostly done small group living away from bigger towns. Hasn't been amusing so far.
