I was killed by a bear a few days ago because I got too close. I was out side the little red circle, but it still ate me. It sucked, I am not a power gamer and I lost a bunch of LP, but it was my own stupid fault.
This is why you don't trust this tool. Useful, yes, but just like any tool, it has it's time and place. If you don't want to get ran over, just flat don't even let a boar or bear within sight of you--if you can see it on your screen, you're too close. Anything else and you run the risk of a lag death.
