I have heard the plausible hypothesis that while grass will sustain most cows, pregnant cows will starve if that is the only option because grass only provides one unit of food at a time, while pregnant cows hit an available food source for more than that.

I also seem to remember loftar mentioning something about not wanting cows to reproduce in the wild because it would have some effect on server load.

Cows reproducing in the wild is handled by auroch/cattle difference. Simply put, wild critters simply aren't coded to breed. That's a different thing entirely. But yes, it seems that grassland can sustain animals, but cannot grow your animal population.

can help a lot 12x20 Carrots farm level 40 farm and a week make Q32 to 26 Carrots and full Nature helps a lot you make carrots 2x a day
i 2 cows go to baby cows soon 200+ food a day for 4.5 days and help to move cows go give you baby and move bull do not sex cows all time
