You don't need to. You can tame them without losing even defense bar.
And even if you miss in the process, all you'll lose is some defense (which you can wait to replenish in the process)

seriously, read taming guide, but i'll give you the short version:

1 fence with an open corner
Code: Select all
XXX
X.X
XX

2 call thunder to 30 or so init
3 sidestep from the corner and step away 3 times
4 sting like a bee and step away
5 quell
6 wait for reaggro, go to 2

You only need 17IP if you use Skuld instead of Thunder. And I find it much easier to use the corner trick with fire signs rather than fence signs, they have a bit smaller hitbox. Also, you can attack a different member of the herd (not the one you're taming!) to skip waiting for aggro.

i don't have call the thunder, or skuld D: all i have is brawling, unarmed and milita training atm

you need the leadership skill for call thunder, and warrior spirit (req ancestral worship and soldier training) for sting like a bee. skuld requires tales by the hearth and only saves you 3 init per quell. you actually only need 20 init per quell using sidestep but i recommend 30 incase you stay too long by the animal and lose an advantage point.

My advice, wait. Taming is glorious, to see that wildlife fall to your whim. But it's not for a noob. There will always be something to tame, so take your time, get your stats up, and do it right when you're able to.

Why does everyone recommend that much IP ? You can do it with 14 ip provided you don't screw up and get hit.
You Sidestep 3 times ( 3x4=12 IP ),
Consume the Flames ( SHP cost),
Quell the beast ( 2 IP);
Total 14 IP. Even with Invocation of skuld you still need 16 (3x3 cost + 7 required to activate the the last Skuld move)

Sting Like a Bee is preferable to Consume the Flames when you're taming multiple animals.

I guess it can be a problem when you have really high con, it depends on the player I guess. When I tamed mine I was happy with it because it makes you hungry.
