Get that tobacco, beer, and boar tusk snuff stacked atop your bear cape and bear tooth talisman, and you can mine out some ore for a few seconds. True mining is done in drunken, violent spasms a few seconds long each.

Good advice that I advocate myself. Any alcohol works for getting the 'drunk' buffs. Tobacco only increases Psy and reduces travel weariness--no str gain there.

Just getting wine/beer now and preparing for lvl 2 mining. Never been there yet, so we'll see how hard this rock is.
