There's actually no point in that. The chicks will just move to any 4x4 space if it's available when the chick matures.

But won't the presence of the chicks in those slots prevent more eggs from being laid?

Eggs get dropped in whatever space is available. If there is no space, eggs won't get laid. Word is that if the egg isn't directly below a chicken, it won't hatch. I won't confirm nor deny it, but my experience may tell me it's bull. I haven't tracked close enough to be sure, though.

Eggs are laid in 2x2 tiles directly under the hen, and are incubated in those tiles as well. If these 4 tiles are full, the hen won't lay an egg even if there's room elsewhere in the coop.

Well, that would explain why my coop layout works. :)
