Also of question, will animals eat from a trough if they cannot reach it? The wiki says "will feed animals inside its range" and we tried this a little. It almost appears that animals will somehow osmosis the food through the air and consume from a trough outside their pen. Thoughts?

They don't need to touch the trough, it just needs to be in the radius circle. Working as intended.

I've heard this before too from very reliable sources. Never tried it before myself =)

nope, they dont always choose the highest. they do tend to pick the highest fodders, but usually start eating from a certain direction to another. i forgot which side to which since i dont have many troughs yet on this world. there has been some reports on the forum threads that they sometimes eat grass instead of from fodders available as well (and lower the food eaten quality).

Food Troughs are amazing @_@
also i've tested the food trough picking thing
not sure about east/west ordering, but they prefer more northern food troughs to more southern ones (I tested it with my 4 troughs stacked north/south)
pretty sure it has nothing to do with food Q and everything to do with placement.
