I heard it was 6, but I haven't even discovered hard leather yet.

Does anyone else know?

Edit: Also are there any underground springs deep underground?

A mine hole always leads to the next lower layer (until there are no more layers to go to). If it's on the surface, it goes to layer 1 (L1). If it's on L1 (in a cave), it goes to L2, etc. I forget if there's 5 or 10 layers under the surface total.

There's ten, and there are no natural caves on layer 2 or beyond.
