Another way is to get the latest version of Ender's client and to explore the cave.
Make a screenshot of the entire cave layout and overlay it with a screenshot of your location on Algeralith's map, so that the cave entrances match.
That way, you'll always know exactly what's below you while you're walking around the surface.
