My skills are about 7 each. I takes me about 3 good punches to get ants to zero/low enough defense to hurt them.

I have noticed that when I do damage with a weapon, I see a red number and a yellow number. What does that mean?

Red is SHP, yellow is HHP. Animals don't actually have HHP, so the second number is meaningless for hunting.

As for your skills, I advise you to stick with pure UA till you hit at least 100.

Ok, thanks for the advice but I have run into another problem.

We all know that there are three sets of ants guarding the ant hill. Problem is I can't kill them fast enough before more ants appear.

Is there any way to improve how quickly I can gain attack/defense? Especially in between fights, where my attack is empty and defense is low after finishing the last opponent.

Are you using the different manoeuvres? Switching between Oak Stance and Bloodlust as needed is crucial. It can be tricky till you get the hang of it, but if you end up losing you can always just walk away, the ants are very slow.

Oh, and if you just want some delicious ants rather than combat practice, you can kite them to raid the hill without a fight. Start raiding, and when they aggro you walk away, ants in tow. The idea is to lead them far enough from the hill, and then run back to it and raid it before they can return. If it's near water it's easy mode, just hop on your boat and wait till the ants reach the water's edge, after that their AI breaks and they stop attacking you, even though they'll still have aggro on you.

I don't have Oak Stance or Bloodlust. Right now I am doing the kiting thing, but I'd like to just smoosh the ants instead of having to mess around like that.

Get those 3 last points in UA it might make the difference sense it is a 42% increase to your skills.

Also if you want to imagine a full Melee build imagine someone who can dodge or throw a quick punch. He's really good a blocking with a shield and swinging his sword but the sword swing isn't the same as a fast punch. The Unarmed build is someone who can dodge and weave and is dealing quick punches which sure aren't as devastating as a good sword swing but for trying to knock your opponent off balance or increase tempo in his advantage. Basically as the sword wielder is swing the unarmed fighter try and get behind him or throw him off balance and be dealing quick strikes.

The only way to be melee is to have a proper balance. And I'd say that even after 100 UA, points in UA are still a good decision sense full UA is a legitimate build especially one on one.
