Actually there is a better way, but its quiet painfull: draw some regional maps ingame (there is a skill for that: cartography) of the nearest lakes. So if you have all what it need to do so, that's quiet funny the first time. There is an other easy way, use ender client, zoom your minimap out to max when on a near lake (take a big lake it will be easier) and find it on the w5 map.

Mountains are pretty recognizable at a glance.

I can only recognize mountains due to their location like a mountain near a river or lake or mudflat. The mountain itself I can rarely recognize.

Honestly, there really isn't a better way of finding yourself. At first it will seem like an imposable task because of the sheer size of the map, but eventually you find a mudflat, or a yellow moor or some pink section that is really unique, and just start to search like a madman for it. Once you find it, it feels so exciting and then life instantly becomes so much easier. You can see travel options, know all neighbor locations and accomplish so much more.
