im no veteran at all, but i try to harvest everything at stage 4 too and it occasionally comes out differently at stage 5. however, never experienced having lower q. always the same or higher q at the last stage as far as i remember. (i keep records on an excel sheet since w3, but i always replace the final q and do not keep the records of how many of those have gotten higher q at the last stage.)

I have an Excel sheet of every tree position and Q, and never seen a change in Q neitehr + or -, this is just from my limited data only. But I have not done trees in W5 so I dont know if anything was changed this world.

my data is even more limited since i started playing later.
anyways, on w3 it was a bit more obvious to see tree q raising from stage 4 to stage 5. but i couldnt check all trees at stage 4 since i grew too many at the same time, and i cant talk about the rate even from my limited records.
on w4, since i wasnt doing only farming but all other works too, i couldnt grow many enough trees. but from very small sample of w4 trees, i did not have any that grew higher q at stage 5 from stage 4.
on w5, i started rather late and have not grown many enough yet either, but so far, i remember seeing at least 3 trees raising q at stage 5 from stage 4, which were 17 to 19, 26 to 28, and 27 to 28. (more than just 3, but just trying to write only about what i still remember. and dont bash my shitty tree quality, i have started growing trees only recently xD)

Observed same phenomena. The quality can go up too. I suppose its some sort of stat-shuffling like with bloom, when turn it into wrought iron.I guess it just has a chance to happen when the tree recieves the decay hit that makes it grow to the final stage.

Could be wrong with all that, though.

I don't really think so. Especially not for fir trees. I've watched at least 40 grow up this world and the final Q is always the 4th stage Q.

Only thought. Growth stunting... Could something have been placed in the tree's growing radius that might have reduced the Q? I seem to remember having read something about stunting reducing the Q.

I've had trees drop in quality between stages, I was concerned harvesting affected it, if not that then possibly soil quality?

i had an opportunity to ask Loftar on IRC, and he confirmed the tree quality never changes from the next to last stage into the final stage.
so i guess i was seeing the wrong stage as the "next to last" stage, as in there are supposed to be 6 stages
(well i never counted how many stages there were, so please forget about what i said on 4 or 5.)

sorry about the fuss
