I don't think we have enough information to say that with certainty, as all the mines I'm aware of (three that I know where they are, anyway) have been on non-forest terrain.

and how do i find the mine location ? it tells me "iron: 1% of useable" ... do i have to run around and look more often ? i thought there was some kind of radar like when searching for underground water ?

Basically what Potjeh said. You're also welcome to run around wildly and basically play hot-and-cold if you have enough rustroot, though.
