It's just bad luck. I've heard of some people who got 8 bulls in a row.

so u lock animal in, start the steps above and thats it? u dont need to go inside where the animal is at any point?

i've read the wiki thread an dthis forum thread. ive seen people do it, and it seems they go in and out of the gated area wher ethe animal is from time to time. all i'm asking is, when? at what stage do u go in and what move do u do?

*sigh*
ok, the idea of taming is to trap the animal near you, but out of reach (but you can walk up to it when you're ready)
if you have a palisade you can lock the animal in the door, the animal's hitbox and gate hitbox will overlap so it wont be able to move. also animals dont destroy palisades, try it with a roundpole fence and you'll hear a tap tap slap as the boar breaks through to maul you to death.
you can also use water to trap the animal, find a piece of shoreline where you can get the animal stuck far away from you while you're in the shallows (much simpler on a lake than on a river)

after you have the animal trapped you use "call down the thunder" until you have plenty of IP:

enough for 3 sidesteps (or 3 invocations of skuld)
(if you take SHP damage while using any of these moves you'll need an extra sidestep or skuld to get the 3 advantage)

and enough IP for consume the flames (or sting like a bee)

and of course 2 more afterwards for "quell the beast"

once you do that you can just run up to the animal and use sidestep/skuld 3 times in a row (if you cant take one or two hits from the animal in that time, then you should use sidestep/skuld after twitch and then retreat...3 times) and then back off
if you do this part correctly you have 3 combat advantage and you're standing out of range of the animal
next you can use consume the flames or sting like a bee and run away again before it uses 2 moves or hits you for SHP damage
finally you should be standing at some distance from the beastie with 3 combat advantage (at least) 2IP and 0 combat intensity, you may now wait for the combat cooldown bar to finish and quell the beast.
tada! +20 tameness points!

try not to initiate combat with the specific animal you're taming after that... it has to start a fight with you >_>
but you can sit within aggro range or pick on his herd :D

If it's a herd animal, aggro another member of the herd and you can immediately start taming the first animal again.

thank you for clarifying "pick on his herd"
I could have been more elaborate >_>

When I tame sheep and cows, I'll usually use the time to slaughter the ones I don't want to tame (after I'm sure I have a male and female of the species). Just wanted to clarify you could start taming right away that way. :)
