Honestly it's worth it just to drop a support at the center. They're not THAT hard to build.

He was also snaking diagonally, not normally...

And yes, a mine support should be used that low when you are turning or trying to make an intersection, anything that isn't the tried and true snake method.

1. Do the cave-ins always make the same damage on the same level?
2. Does it depend on the stone/ore quality or on the depth of the mine?
3. Is it maxHP+level*50?

I don't know about the damage, but it does indeed get stronger as you go down. I've been insta KOed on level one, with about 170 HP at the time. But my friend who died on L3 had well over 200.

damage is static is all I know. Always 50 on L1 for example, but you can get hit by multiples.

You always lose 100% of your SHP from a cave in. Otherwise

I have been hit by multiples on L1. Accidentally hit the wrong tile and a cave-in occurred on the first swing, took out a support, and I got hit for 100 HHP.

I never take risk even though I can survive a Lv4 Cave-In, safety first. I always Support at intersections. Not hard to do. Alt HF at mining face warp idol get stuff warp back. Its only 1 warp worth per support (2 T-sack + Merch).

And if you REALLY don't want to risk it, spawn an alt, give it your bear cape necklace and pick, and force feed it BBBs until it has enough str to mine. THEN, you won't have to worry about losing all your precious LP.

You will have to worry about:
1)That faux miner will never be as good as a real miner, and it does make a difference.
2)If he dies you still lose that STR you pumped in, arguably not as much of a loss, but still a loss.
