Oh dear - still confused

Basically, the plan should be to make the highest q smelter I can, and then make everything else of Q >= the cast quality, since everything else just softcaps?

...or is the hammer+anvil NOT just a softcap, and I should buy as high a q as possible? Does hammer+anvil also raise the Q of weapons and armour I make on it, if its Q is higher than the bars I'm using?

Sorry I'm being slow with this, its just I am probably going to nearly bankrupt my poor village buying this stuff, so I don't want to make a silly mistake :P

Hammer+Anvil raise Q of armor/weapons/anything made with it. Always get the highest possible.

Anvil/hammer increases quality, as does smelter. Having a good Q on both of those should be an aim as soon as you can afford it. Best clay goes to good kiln first obviously.
