One block is 4 ticks I am pretty sure

I'm thinking the same thing, but I can't remember where the fuel conversion is on the wiki. :(

Also, why would anyone use blocks as fuel when you can just split them into branches and get more fuel that way?

The only time I use blocks for fuel is when I'm using blocks to make trash charcoal because one block is enough to fuel the kiln to turn 10 blocks to 20 charcoal.

Fuel Bug (15 min) + Charcoal + timer with 5 min ( can use Ender's timer ).

I like charcoal Q :)

Right click on EVERYTHING!! You'd be surprised what you can do with some things.

Want to build a fence? Don't carry branches, carry blocks! You can carry nearly 3x as much material. Store fuel for your ovens and kilns (branches that is) as blocks in a crossroad or palisade post construction sign. (I like the xroad sign because you can put branches and blocks in it and you can put them much closer together.
