The old system allowed you to destroy the world, and get rewarded for it. Tear down forests, pave over grasslands, get rewarded. It left itself open for bots, which would just roam the world felling trees and amassing LP, ruining huge swathes of land and allowing anyone to become extremely powerful with no effort.
Currently, you must work for your gains. That road isn't going to magically give you carpentry skill. The road will allow you to travel from your village to the river easier, like a road is supposed to do. Destroying a forest won't give you LP, but it will allow you to build a wall. Things are slightly more realistic now, and encourage smart use of resources. Personally, I'd like to be able to gain skill through repetition, fire enough arrows and gain some marksmanship skill. This would start to open bot abuse again though.
Of course, OP looks like he was a botter, so I dunno why I'm wasting my time saying any of this...
