"wikipedia" is divided into "wiki" and "pedia". The "pedia" is derived from "encyclopedia" in that it's a collect of knowledge. The "wiki" part mostly means that it's a community tool that's open to the public. Dwarf Fortress has the magmawiki, which is publicly available magma (not far from the truth) and I can't recall now but I've seen wikizombie somewhere before.

Wiki's are older than Wikipedia by a few years (late 90s for wiki's if I recall right). I think there's even an article on Wikipedia about them and their creator.

The server for a wiki is public domain and open source. Anyone can build one if they want to set up the server for it. There are several well known free wiki server available such as wikia.com, however, they have their own rules. (This is why someone established a separate site for the HnH wiki.)

Just remember: Wikipedia is a wiki, not the other way around.

Do you mean havenandhearth.wikia.com? The part where it says "wikia" does not say "wikipedia".

Just look at the last two parts when determining a site. In this case, it's still wikia.com. havenandhearth.wikia.com is just a subdomain. ninja_yodeler posted the correct wiki 3 posts up.

I know that, but I'm trying to show that wikipedia is a specific wiki, but that not all wikis are wikipedia. It's the logic behind "A cat has four legs, therefore if it has four legs it is a cat" that always baffles me...

Oh, I see guys, thanks for the posts and correcting me.
I also wish to thank you for redirecting me to the correct "wiki", I've studied that one too now.
RIP Thorin.
