Outrunning a Troll

The main pitfall is that there are two forms of danger within mining that strikes at both types of characters: mining characters will be at risk against trolls while those that can fight trolls are at risk of cave-ins. A way to circumvent this is to have barriers set to fend off trolls so your miners survive long enough to keep the troll within view distance so your fighters can attack the troll.

And the wiki is very wrong. I've mined somewhere around 22,600 tiles out on L1, around 11,000 on L2, and anywhere between 2,000 and 4,000 on layers 3, 4, and 5. The chance of a troll spawning is more like 0.00001%. It's extremely low, and it's worth your character dying. Unless you're retarded, and you're in a crappy village, and nobody in your village can craft q300 troll tools.

Don't count the tiles on L1. They won't even spawn there. I will agree that it's less than 1%, though.

I'm not sure it's worth a main dying to a troll, though. I'm not sure it's a common enough spawn to make just having an alt to avoid dying to a troll, but with the other risks of mining, it's just one more reason for alt mining.

For some, fighting a troll isn't the problem but a mistake on mining that can kill a character faster than getting hit by a q120 B12 axe fro a world 3 brick-basher while having no defense and humans will make mistakes. You also don't get to roll a reflex saving throw.
