You can get stone of quality higher than 10 by digging in the mountain. Quality nodes for rocks are rare, but they happen sometimes.
Also, if you live in the northern / northeastern part of the map I could provide you with some ql 50 stone axe and maybe bear talisman.

Also, changing your beliefs towards barbarism will increase your strength

1.dig that mountain and find a high q stone node
2.the survival skill determines the quality!
3.try to find a high q tree near a village or so
4.hunt a bear and make yourself a bear cape and a talisman (adds roughly another 45 STR) 30 marksmanship and a q10 sling is enough
5.never build your minehole on a iron node (personal opinion: iron is often coverd in hard stone which is difficult to mine for beginners.)
6.searching for TIN and COOPER is a great start (tin + cooper= bronze which unlocks all the stuff like: pickaxe, miners helmet etc)
7.prospect for nodes on the surface or dig into one direction until you find something.
8.corkscrew to prevent cave-ins! (everything above 1x3 will most-likely cause a cave in)

9. continue hunting boars and bears or make a pumpkin farm to raise your STR.

hope these are some helpfull tips :D

this zig-zag in upper part of the screen may cause cave-ins. Only the snake in the lower part is safe

Depends on the amount of your HHP, mine level and amount of boulders in the area.
If I'm not mistaken, the amount of damage done is:
50 * cave level * amount of boulders nearby

if this is bigger than your HHP then you die

It's 50 * cave level for each hit. It can be a random number of hits, though. From the experience I've had, the more mined out an area is, the more likely multiple hits occur.

You get a fuckin' stone because there is no fuckin' ore there. Fuck off and mine somewhere else.

When you mine, any given tile will give you EITHER a stone (which falls on the floor) OR some ore (which goes into your inventory). If a tile is giving stone, the tiles around it probably will, too. Move.

Hardness also comes in nodes. If the rock is too hard to be useful, look elsewhere for some that's softer.

I've read lots of threads on zig zag the one thing that confuses me is how do you redirect your route.

Say I have prospected and got a hint of a node 0 deg (using Enders) this is to the top of the screen. Yet zig zag will take you to the top left or top right of screen. Is there a safe way to readjust where you want to head?

I'm not sure the zig zag in the top of screen could cause cave in. I do it a lot and i never had cave-in.
