So kill two bunny rabbits and get five bits of string (there are plant fibres in your dead village?), and then you will have a sling*. Build, borrow or buy a boat and then you can hunt the things-that-can-kill-you without them killing you. OR, fence off a rock on a heath/moorland and kill a whole load of aurochs and mouflon, and you will be able to make vast quantities of crap leather. DO NOT get bored half way through and decide that you will be able to break one of the signs and make a run for safety in the nearest house or river. Also, DO NOT accidentally hit a passing fox while trying to shoot aurochs or mouflon, as the fox will similarly break the signs and allow you to be trampled to death by sheep (to be fair, that one was quite amusing and I had leather armour and DID manage to get to the river without dying, to a soundtrack of 'Run! I'm sorry! Keep running! I didn't mean to shoot the fox! Aaargh!' (WTF just how did he shoot the fox, IDEK)).
* If there aren't any tanning tubs lying around, or possibly even if there are, you will need to buy Animal Husbandry and Leatherworking in order to turn the (dried) bunny hides into leather. It's not difficult, but you do need to discover ALL THE THINGS in order to be able to make them.
ETA: You really do need a boat if you don't know where there's any clay. Keep checking ([A]dventude [D]ig) in the shallow water every hundred squares or so, or just boat around until you find some unclaimed kilns on a riverbank somewhere; that'll be a low-q clay node that someone's used for their brickwall. If you find a claimed clay node, try digging just outside the claim in case they've only claimed the centre of the node. And run away if anyone sees you.
