Find distinctive landmarks in your area. Lakes of specific shapes, mountains, swamps, etc.. Anything that can catch your eye on such a large map.
I believe algeraith has said that it uses the coordinate system that loftar programmed in to figure out its location on the main map but I may be entirely mistaken.

As for trade most people use village idols or crossroads to conduct trade. You load a character, often an alt, with the trade goods and get them a village invite via being in a party with the lawspeaker or chief. Then break their hearthfire and have them teleport to the village idol with the trade goods. Breaking their hearthfire lets them travel any distance without being limited by agi/weariness. They then teleport back with the goods they received, repeat as many time as trips are necessary.

Trade by foot is generally seen as insane.
