So basically you are suggesting he/she steals a boat?!

People abandon boats all over the place. I used to pick them up and had a sort of "salvage yard" in my village. I had over a dozen boats at one point.

How can you tell if a boat is abandoned? Well, if it has gone red it means that whoever built it is not doing maintenance on it. If they were still using it they would have repaired it. The downside of that is that you do not want to be in a boat when it finally decays and sinks...

Most people either stay near their boat or leave it on a claim if they want it back, so another thing you can do is use area chat and yell if anyone minds you taking this boat... This is a highly hazardous thing to do, as plenty of players will come storming back from their bear hunt and slaughter you for the mere suggestion. For the more cautious simply nip off quietly, forage somewhere else for an hour or two and then come back. If the boat is still there undisturbed it makes it likely that the person who left it there did not intend to come back. It's not definite though.

If aiming to be scrupulously honest avoid picking up boats that you find inland, especially if they are behind something. This generally indicates that someone didn't want to lose it and didn't have a claim so they took it away from plain sight on the shore.

I got my boat by clicking on a signpost that I assumed was just an un-built fire. I was looking for a quick stick to put into a campfire but found an un-built boat with just two planks in it instead. I didn't have boat building yet but I did have carpentry and a saw. : D I figure it was probably fair game since it was near a very abandoned settlement and who ever had started it had put almost no effort into it. Likely they had just started it as a way of not throwing away two surplus planks.

In a game where claiming property is easy, this is all the more rules you need to follow. "If it ain't claimed, it's fair game."
