For the newbs:
If you're getting shot at while in combat, don't stand still for the guy aiming. The archer is more dangerous than the guy waving a sword in your face. The guy with the sword at least has to break your defense first before attempting a mortal wound. (There's a lot more to it than this. This is just the super-condensed version.)
Something someone hasn't mentioned: forced summoned. What's all that armor going to do for you? Keep you alive long enough to MAYBE get logged in. In that case, you'd probably want to have the most HP buffer you can get.

force summon they don't even need to kill you, just KO you then they can remove your armor and your as good as gone.
