"Protection" has a lot of meaning to it. Just being on a claim gives some level of protection because it requires anyone looking to do ill to have purchased the black skills that start at 20k LP and go up, up, up. (Rage 30k, Trespassing 20k, Theft 40k, Vandalism 50k, Murder 100k.) It keeps out the newbies, but vets that are out to cause problems are just going to scoff at pretty much anything short of a brick wall.

Anything truly valuable shouldn't be left laying in a cupboard for someone to break in and steal, with or without walls. Log out with it in your inventory. Once you get a palisade up, you're safer, but odds are there is someone in the general area with enough strength to break a hole in your wall without a ram. Thus the rule will still apply. Heck, even a roundpole fence without a gate increases your protection because it bumps the cost of breaking in from trespassing to vandalism (an extra 90k in skills). This only works as long as all parts of the fence are on claimed ground, though.

Just a heads up: Never, ever, ever leave a runestone with in-game contact information. Always leave a forum name for a personal message or an email address! A misused hearth secret can cause all kinds of grief. Besides, trying to catch a neighbor online could be as bad as trying to catch a fly with chopsticks.

Well, I got news for you. They didn't steal it. They broke it. You can't steal a bed with someone sleeping in it. Just be glad they didn't really grief you bad or you'd be stuck logging back in in the wilderness. Since you have a claim, they left scents. Get a post up in the Inn or In Congress. There might be a friendly ranger in your area that will come and hunt them down. This is the protection that a claim provides: the threat of death for various deeds. They are either noobs or figured you were new enough that you won't be able to serve retribution. (There can be the case where the cost of retribution against the perpetrator is going to be too high. It'll be up to you to decide once they're tracked down.)
