Auch in der BRD ist die Benutzung von doppel s anstelle ß gebräuchlich - es ist beides korrekt - ganz nebenbei ist sogar sz ok.

Also in Germany the use of double s instead of ß is common - both are correct - besides even sz is ok.

It will work only when you choose german layout for your keyboard.
Alt modifiers work differently for different languages. For example, for me alt+s is ś

Alt + 0223 (on Numpad) - should work on every keyboard layout (except Notebook keyboards without where you might get the numbers with Fn key)
