Yup. Malicious is right.
Think of a node as a pile of sand poured out on the ground. There's a finite amount there (determined by node size and quality). If you dig at the edge, you can take off only so much and it won't lower the peak much. If you dig at the peak, you lower it quickly but take longer to hit bottom.
