I'm not sure i'm really qualified to reply as i'm by no means that experienced in this game, but if its any help:

I have a mixed crop farm and my wax q has gone up at roughly 10q lower than crop q and hive was made at start from low q products.

For eg: my flax seeds are largest crop at moment for banners and are at 48q and wax is now at 36q

However, wheat seeds are quite a bit higher, but only occupy small area at present.

Therefore, i came to conclusion it was based on largest crop production, but like i said, i'm by no means an expert. :D

I had much better luck with wax last world than I am this world. The interesting thing is that I'm doing things exactly the same way. I have a mixed hive and a 50/50 hemp/wheat hive. The 50/50 hive is always lower quality than the mixed but it also has lower quality crops. My mixed hive has crops ranging from 30-70 quality and so far the highest wax I have gotten out of that is 28. I got the 28 right after building a new hive and since then it has dropped to 22. I can slow the quality decline if I leave the honey in there since any new lower quality honey that is produced is averaged with what's already in there. If the honey gets emptied, the quality drops faster. The only time I've gotten an increase in quality is when I build a new hive, which I've started doing every time I harvest my wheat. It's the only way I have made any progress. I have tried being completely OCD about cycling the crops as soon as they were ready and also tried being a slacker about it. The only difference was the amount of wax produced, the quality issues were the same either way.
