Ya, this is true. Seriously, you only need like 10 UAC and Leadership before you can kill every animal in the world in melee combat. Mind you everyone has a bit of trouble with Deer but it's possible with them too. A sword would speed that up by quite a bit.

@OP try finding a cave and mining if you want metals...but if you're only after animals, its alot easier with a sling.
