You need to be out on the water to fish dude..that or the shallows..

Because you suck at figuring it out. Discover all items. Then try. Don't just pick up a pole and have the fishing ability and expect to do shit.

Your character needs to be a specific distance from the water (you don't need to fish directly on the school). It doesn't "auto lock-on" to where you can fish and you can in fact fish anywhere, just those places without nodes will not yield anything.

Get into a boat and you essentially eliminate this problem.

Adventure -> Fishing -> Left click water
Do it in a boat, if it still isn't working you don't have a fully equipped pole with either bait or lure.
