If you are hunting boars one should do as described above but bears and dears can be killed with a different and more safer technique.
1. Aggro the bear with the Punch combat maneuver. Cheap and easy skill to get. Just remember to abort your move action as you will start to move towards the bear directly into the shoreline. If you don't pay attention you will lose your boat and either drown or die to the aggroed animal.
2. The AI of animals were supposed to make them run away if they didn't have a direct line of kill to you. But something happens in the code that makes them stupid. If you get them to run away from you AND they don't have to low HP the AI gives the animal a order to turn back and attack you. But as its doing that it forgets to turn hostile as it was turned friendly towards you as it started to run. You can abuse this bug to get them to come back IF AND ONLY IF you keep aggro, stand on land, in your boat directly glued to the shore line or anywhere where the animal wont have troubles getting back and kill you if it was hostile. You can also abuse this mechanic to taim hostile animals. Remember YOU HAVE TO STAND STILL or it will permanently run away. There are a few factors that determine when and if it will turn back so this is not a guarantee. Some instances it will run into objects it can destroy and lose aggro towards you. It might also run away if you start moving around. Other times it runs to far and wont have time to get back. Basically its random but its safer then getting off your boat and start to chase after it after turning aggro off. Bottom line, don't drop aggro, glue your boat to the shore and stand absolutely still till the animal turns back and comes after you.
3. When the animal shows up again and is coming back he is friendly. BUT he will destroy your boat if your in it. Either get out of the boat or get out of its line of destructive area. I might add here, you should lose aggro as soon as he starts getting closer. He wont stick around if your in your boat out in the water. If you get out of your boat he wont kill you but sometimes he might start running again. Safest here is to lose aggro as soon as he gets closer. He will come back and stand still right where he was before he took off if you do this right.
4. Take aim and shoot. If it starts running again repeat as above. Sometimes they don't run and perma aggro and you will know that if he did that and you were off chasing after him on land your hunter would have died to the bear or the dear or whatever.
Remember this is not a guarantee but its fun mechanic to abuse. Let me just add that taim bears can clear hearth fires, no other animal can. You can use them to also destroy objects around your base that people have left. Boars usually run away and never come back unless they get healed by dears if they run by a bunch of dears and gets healed. Tame dears can come in handy if you want a few around to heal yourself on them. But don't lose aggro. If you lose aggro both bear and boar will turn hostile again if you get closer.
. And buy decent sling on the market.
