Guys, don't forget you can always buy monocle (50 - 100 pts, for around 50 PERC) and ranger set (100 ~ 180 pts per piece, cape for 30+ PERC and pants for 15+ EXPL). :)
People are capable of kindness angels can only dream of, yet can commit sins that put demons to shame.

it really doesn't matter what "path" you're taking, you really should go for hunting early on before you even think of most other things(foraging being that 1 exception). I'll agree with no access to metal beermaking is a waste of points since you can't drink the stuff without a tankard(that really should be changed), but what was meant by 50 exp is that when you have 128 perception(and you'll be a lot higher than that at some point) with 50 expl you can see all foragables and while perception has benefits beyond foraging/tracking exploration doesn't so its better to get more perc than expl since you can spend that lp on other things...since if you had stopped at 50 instead of going to 53 you'd have another 15600 lp to use for other skills.

Why would I want to go for hunting so early? What's the advantage? With fishing and pumpkins I am not short on strength food. With rabbits I am not short on leather for palli building. Apart from high q bones to keep upgrading my saw what would I be gaining?

are you really asking that? you need better than q10 fur if you want better leather. why would you need better leather? well there is leather armor(since you have no metal) which will keep you alive a little longer in a fight, maybe even long enough to win. there are also 2 leather curios, neither are that great, but they exist. next thing you get would be a bear cape and a bear tooth talisman, these are great for strength and charisma bonuses. you also seem to think meat is only for strength, you're very wrong there. each meat has a different fep when roasted except bear/boar are both strength, but fox is int, mutton is perception, beef is con, chicken is dex, and rabbit is agility. on top of that there is sausage making, and you can always trade with someone in your area for a meat grinder.

now if you don't care for quality, or even want to advance past your current state in the game then don't worry about hunting. on the other hand if you do care and want to get past being a noob with a little house and no palisade(which is why you're asking for help here right?) then go get a boat a sling and atleast 10 mm and go kill a bear!

If you really don't need leather any more then start turning bear skins into teddy bear curios. You can never have enough curiosities.

i have 152 perc x 50 expl. Not planning to raise expl anymore but perc there is no limit as im also a hunter. I don't think you really need more then 50 explo if you are planning to raise perc.

I play a different game than you guys do, I think. I don't especially enjoy hunting since it is so time consuming in the early stages, what with wandering around hopelessly looking for game and then playing solitaire in a different window while the aiming meter slowly inches up towards yellow. I also figure I am so vulnerable to attack that I simply avoid all combat. Low q leather armour is not so much of an improvement over no armour at all. My favourite game involves lots of farming, building, tree planting and foraging. So for me investing in 50+ exploration was worth it. At this point I am getting five or so cave bulbs in every cave run and with pepper on them my stats are starting to even out nicely. Remember the whole point of my opening game is to try not to let psyche trail too far below perception. My question that opened this thread was about how exp and per effect foraging, not hunting or ranging. The lp involved in getting my explore up to 55 is weighed against the trouble of getting psyche up from 10 when perception is above twenty. I'd rather let my character gain lp while I am logged out than spend too long drearily trolling caves for cave bulbs while my per*exp is so low that I maybe don't find any during an hour's game play.

I think one difference in my game play is that I don't think of H & H as a combat or hunting game but as a survival game. Sooner or later some hero is going to come along in steel armour and merchant's robes and one hit my character, and I know that I do not have the combat skills or patience to grind so that it would be a fair fight. So I am prepared to write my characters off at a moment's notice, if I decide that the neighbourhood has deteriorated, or I get raided or if I simply get bored. In a game of see-how-far-I-can-go-before-I-start-over avoiding hazards gets me farther than upgrading my leather armour from q27 to q34. So far the only downside I can see is that for the first week and a half of game play I have to do without a bear tooth necklace and bear and boar based curios. Stocking my mentory with snapdragons and flotsam seems to make up for it.
