Well, if the breeding really does "softcap", I think the softcap doesn't effect the final number, but rather the original value. For example, if it were softcapping the final value/ My cows hit q30 milk quality and breeding quality in their second gen, and in order for it to operate like the breeding quality was softcapping the final value it would need to be -5 +50.
(50 + 10) / 2 = 30
Given the rate of quality increase, that does seem a ridiculous notion though.
So, I believe you only need feed/not soft-cap your cows at their current QL, not taking into account "quality increases".
Like, for example, a hypothetical cow:
q30 milk quality
and a hypothetical Bull:
q25 breeding quality
(30 + 25) / 2 = 27.5 = 27
Milk QL of offspring = 27(-5+20) = Potential 47 quality milk even with a q25 softcap.
In effect, this means you can get a generation beyond without softcapping, and if food DOES softcap (which people have provided little evidence for), you need only ensure your animals are fed to the level identical with your bull/ram/hog highest breeding QL.

That could get ahead of fodder quality (pumpkins especially), although that's a scary thought honestly.
My villagers will enjoy the bierwurst.
