You can shoot from close range, it doesn't affect damage.

If you shoot from a boat or behind some form of barrier (such as a signpost or another player), you can attack while remaining relatively safe.
You see a masterful engraving by Blaze. On it is Blaze, bears, boars, and foxes. Blaze is striking down the bears. The boars are screaming. The foxes are in a fetal position. The image relates to the return of Blaze in the late winter of 2009.

if bow is useless in melee, how to kill anything with a bow, since most animals seem to be quite fast?

If I understand your question correctly - then yes, you can shoot a bow when face to face with the enemy, I have no eveidence that you take a combat penalty because you are using a range weapon in close quarters combat (I may be mistaken, merely stating basis my own experience).

However, when using a bow and arrows to shoot, marskmanship is used to determine chance to hit, even if you are right in front of the enemy.

How to kill animals with bow and arrows - get on your boat and shoot them from it when you see them on the shore, they hardly ever run away. If your marksmanship is still weak, take more arrows. I started with 2 full quivers against lvlX bears when my marksmanship was around 30. Huge LP gain, get out there and do it! :)

Marksman is a great starting skill for hunting, but you shouldn't push it above 50, once you reach 100 or more melee you will see its advantage. Also note that Chop hits way less than Sting (axe/sword).

Going to take your word on it for now, ven though my melee is already at 100 and it is still a great disadvantage compared to archery. Also, as mentioned, my stone axe is the same q as my bow and even with strength buffed (bear cape), the axe does maybe 5% more damage atm.

What special move hits more often with an axe please, 'cause chop SUCKS? Or what special move is best to use with an axe?

Also, what combat move is best to be used with an axe, eg. shield, bloodlust, dodge, etc.?

*I'm trying my damdest to find the "other" cave entrance for 3 seperate mines I have successful readings for in caves and moving overland is near impossible for me still   *

Well are you talking about a puny q10 Stone axe here? You shuld try to get a sword, and be it only a windsword, storm of swords just kicks bear asses.

Right, there is no penalty TO HIT for using marksman face to face....but you are going to get hit a lot more with marksman than with melee or unarmed. That is the penalty.
