that's what foraging alts with just perception+ exploration are for, I haven't left the base with my main since the Brick wall went up.
Early world exploit: Put your hearthfire inside a cave, then hold shift to position a claim right in front of a cave. After 8 hours the claim will be unbreakable. Since your hearthfire is inside the cave, you can still get back inside, and leave, but nobody will be able to enter, effectively making you unraidable for the first 3-7 days. Enjoy

^ For any village, or a determined hermit, it's quite easy to farm the carrots required to level a forage alt. Took me about 1.5 weeks to get 60*60 + 40 surv on an alt.

Now I can forage without worrying about losing my ability to contribute to the village/play.

I'd like to know if it's neccesary to be far away from waterways. I understand that it is easier to protect yourself, but it is also much harder to forage when you are far away from water. No water also means no fish, no mussels (= no pearls), no flotsam. Are there really so many ramming griefers in the game?

If you want to live, as far as you're concerned everyone's a griefer. It's probably best to be far away from water as defense, but I would never do it because it's a nuisance
Just find an empty corner in an empty supergrid and build a base there.

No but it only takes 1 to lose your base. =)
Personally I love beaches and lakes to settle by but if you do, be ready to fight. It won't happen often but it will happen.

For every settlement, safety always becomes an issue sooner or later. Having a fighter alt, and keeping an eye on the surroundings (expecially for signs of a ram being built) is vital.

During w5, I lived right off a river (wall was visible from the river) with a cave in my base and was never bothered. During w6, I lived a minimap and a half or two from a mountain and a minimap or so from a dead-end river and had constant problems. I was visible if a player loaded that minimap, which if one was walking around the mountain trying to forage both, it likely would have been loaded.

There's three important things in real estate: location, location, location. When you live in the ghetto, you gotta pop a cap in someone's ass. When you live in the country, nobody even knows your name, but there might not be any cops around (rangers) if you do need one.

In w3 I planted myself down by a river and more than a few times griefers did their damnedest to steal boats, harass people, clear cut, and generally be a nuisance. I didn't so much mind because I was fine with murdering people and kicking over walls by camping rams when it was necessary. Convenience comes as a double edged sword in that it's more convenient for others to find you.

In w4 I lived by a lake but that actually only lead to one random ganking attempt. What was the difference between w3 and w4? Just luck.

If you settle by water I hope that you end up being exceptionally lucky. =)

I don't think it was mentioned....

Browse the forums, too. Find out where those who are killing and looting everyone around and where people are standing up for each other and their neighbors. If you watch, you can find some very quiet areas or at least some areas with fewer than average black-hearted terrorists.

*Clap Clap Clap. Well said. *Bows Humbly* I am Bartholomew Barges, renowned forager. I choose to reveal myself, the 'baby blue eyes' of all foragers. A natural human I am, I succumb to sins (especially the seven deadly sins on occasion seldomly,) so It is quite often to see me go on fits of insanity and well-controlled StarkRavingMadness. *Exhausted* So if ye hide-> for a quiet place to <-look, look for this human. Seek the runestones of Bart Barge. Soon ye shall find what ye seek if ye truly do.
