I've heart and read different answers about the distace you should keep free around a new grown tree.
How much has it to be to not stunt a growing tree?

Specifically: hitbox size. Safe is 2 tiles around(keep in mind that walking in the tree hitbox area can stunt it as well)

What exactly does stunting a tree's growth mean? Does it just skip that tic and wait until the next to grow, or does it stop growth forever?

I seem to remember larger trees needing 3 tiles space. But absolutely no one bothers to grow those anyway (I should really test this).

Stunt means it grows to the next stage, loses quality, and stops growing permanently I seem to remember.

Is it worth waiting for a tree to reach it's last stage?

Depends on your goal. If you need it as a long term resource (such as mulberry), most definitely let it keep growing until you get better. Otherwise, once you can get the better seeds/cones off of it, cut it down to make room for the next one.

So, problem. My trees will not grow to the last stage it has been 9 RL days, they have 5 tiles around them, they are fir growing on forest terrain. However, they have stopped growing AND will not produce anymore sticks. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

The last stage is not guarenteed. It's random when it pops. I'd say it averages 2 weeks on proper terrain type, varying from right after it grows to the second last stage to a month for them to finish.

Could animals have passed near the trees?

One strange thing happened to me aswell. I used soil with quality about 50, pot quality 30, water qual 30, seeds quality 10 and herb table qual about 70. This should yield tree quality 18. Instead I got two trees with qual 10. Only intrusion near trees was a chicken running through the wall and between the trees. The tree was a grassland type tree placed on grassland tile bordering on forest floor tiles. 5 tiles to next tree and to any obstruction. Any ideas? Bad luck?
