Keys should be a utility item and not something you physically need to open a gate. I've been thinking about this for a long time and I've come up with this idea: Whoever creates the gate becomes the owner. You can change ownership by right-clicking the gate and typing in a new owner, or if the owner hasn't logged in for a long time (like how the current claims work) a new owner can come forth and claim ownership.
The key, in this case, has no purpose in opening the gate at all. The owner of the gate can add friendly people that can open the gate as much as they please while people not on this "list" have no access rights.
But back to the key. I've either thought of the key being used like a scent which can guide you to the gate it belongs to, however after so many uses it destroys the key, or a mobile ownership list for the gate so you don't have to physically be there to change/add more people to your access.
