Force summoning someone with no hearth fire kills them so he would not have woken up at all ;)

Also, I don't think the gear was beaten off of him; he was probably knocked out and then had it stolen off of him.

Could be the bug where you're still asleep in a bed even though you've logged back on. That bug is super common.

Thanks for replies, he had left scents somewhere so could have been summoned. Very strange that he is back in bed, perhaps being summoned doesn't change the 'where you logged out' tag or perhaps dagrimreffah has answered that.
